Director of Financial Management

We are currently supporting the prestigious University of Nottingham in hiring a Director of Financial Management to lead and provide strategic direction to the Financial Function. This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading UK university, in a pivotal role. Supporting the University senior leadership team including the Director of Finance, CFO you will be responsible for all financial reporting, forecasting, short and medium-term financial planning, and budgeting across the University.

Alongside statutory and regulatory reporting and overseeing a team of circa 60 this role will also be heavily involved in designing and delivering a new suite of reporting off the back of a major system implementation “Digital Core” that goes live in Spring 2024. You will understand data, data structures, how information is reported and be heavily involved with reforming finance processes and reporting both internally and externally. It is a major project and maximizing the benefits and capabilities of the new system will be an ongoing priority in the short and medium term.

In this role you will be at the forefront of driving and delivering a suite of effective and transparent financial reporting processes and information , overseeing best practice and inspiring others with your leadership capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and delivery of a robust framework for effective financial management and monitoring and controlling of budgets in the medium and short term.
  • Accountable for the development and coordination of all management and financial accounting and reporting across the University.
  • Develop and implement the University’s financial system strategy including the roll-out of new core systems and functionality.
  • Provide appropriate advice and expertise throughout the University when financial data is required to be utilized.
  • Responsibility for ongoing review and update of financial management policies through appropriate consultation and negotiation.
  • Provide clear vision, leadership, motivation, and inspiration to the Financial Management team of approximately 60 people.
  • Accountable for University treasury management policy and practice including advising the University on the most appropriate borrowing and investment strategies.
  • Maintain professional networks on behalf of the University and develop strategic relationships in order to identify and maximize value.

Requirements:

  • Proven ability to lead, inspire and motivate others through effective leadership and management skills, creating a culture of high performance and continuous improvement in the team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in partnership with a wide range of parties both internally and externally and deliver excellent services in a complex environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven advanced analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • In-depth knowledge of the principles of financial management and control, theory and best practice.
  • Proven track record of extensive experience of working in a senior management role, leading a large team of both professional and support staff across a diverse organisation.
  • Considerable experience of managing and controlling substantial budgets.
  • Proven ability to provide innovative solutions.
  • Collaborative team player with high levels of integrity.
  • Qualified Accountant, plus extensive relevant post-qualification experience in financial control (to include tax, treasury and financial reporting).
  • Experience of implementing an ERP system would be advantageous
